Reliability of Conventional Residential Construction: An Assessment of Roof Component Performance in Hurricane Andrew and Typical Wind Regions of the United States
In this study, the "experience of conventional residential construction is evaluated with respect to the performance of roof components and the risks associated with the actions of wind. The two structural attributes investigated include the attachment of roof sheathing to roof framing members, and the connection of the roof framing members to walls. The two components are most often implicated in damage to conventional wood-frame construction caused by major wind events. Therefore, understanding the performance of these components is essential to understanding the performance of residential construction with respect to wind hazards.
