ELECTRONIC RESOURCES: Native American Homeownership Programs

The National American Indian Housing Council (www.naihc.indian.com) is a 220-member organization that works exclusively to promote homeownership within Native American communities. The organization provides a number of products including technical assistance to housing professionals, training, and information on programs, including the Mortgage Policy Program, and publications related to Indian housing. It also publishes a newspaper called Native Housing News.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Public and Indian Housing Office (www.hud.gov/offices/pih/ih) contains information on several Indian housing programs offered through the federal government. Programs include the Indian Home Loan Guarantee Program (Section 184) and the Tribal Housing Activities Loan Guarantee Program (Title VI). The Web site also includes a one-stop mortgage center that provides financial information to tribes interested in homeownership.

Code Talk, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of North American Programs (www.codetalk.fed.us), supplies government agency information to Native American communities. The site contains links to numerous organizations pertaining to Indian housing issues.

The Enterprise Foundation (www.enterprisefoundation.org) has been rebuilding communities for 20 years through a national network of 2,200 members. The organization participates in the Native American housing special initiative by working with Native American tribes to increase the availability of affordable housing on tribal lands. The organization also participates in the Small Tribes Grant Program.

The Fannie Mae Foundation's Native American Financial Education Program (www.fanniemaefoundation.org) created a financial literacy curriculum (Building Native Communities: Financial Skills for Families) in partnership with the First Nations Development Institute for Native Americans interested in homeownership.

The First Americans Mortgage Corporation (www.nativeamericanlender.com) is a Native American lending and consulting company established in 1995. It aims to increase homeownership among Native Americans by providing financing programs to tribes located within the United States. It also provides assistance to purchase housing units directly from manufacturers.
