Historic Preservation Resources on the Web

Preservation Web is an online guide with information about products and services for the restoration and rehabilitation of historic buildings. It includes a regional sourcebook that allows users to search for resources, a forum where individuals and community-based organizations can share ideas and insights, and examples of other preservation projects.

The National Main Street Center, a division of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, works with communities across the nation to revitalize historic or traditional commercial areas. It provides direct, onsite technical assistance to communities; sponsors an annual conference where community members can share best practices and ideas; and publishes various training materials.

The Downtown Research and Development Center is an independent organization that offers downtown, Main Street, and business improvement professionals news and information on community revitalization, development, and planning. The center publishes two newsletters: Downtown Idea Exchange, which offers information and analysis of successful downtown revitalization efforts, and Downtown Promotion Reporter, which describes tools and techniques for downtown marketing and promotion.

Main Street Port Huron, Inc. highlights a community that revitalized its downtown area. The site lists businesses, festivals, and other events that attract tourists; cultural and historical attractions; and new employment opportunities.

Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. provides leadership, direction, assistance, and resources for improvements and investments in downtown Culpeper’s central business district. Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., encourages public-private partnerships for downtown development, and provides a list of business and real estate opportunities, a shopping and dining guide, and downtown events.

Michigan’s State Historic Preservation Office identifies, evaluates, registers, and protects the state’s historic properties. Preserved properties include Detroit’s East Ferry Avenue Historic District, Sault Ste. Marie’s Chippewa County Courthouse, and Manistee’s North Pier Catwalk. The website includes a list of preservation incentive programs, protection programs, and historic site programs.
