Best Practices: Model Program and Databases

To use the Internet as a research tool to find best practices in housing and community development, turn first to HUD's best practices Web site. Several links point the way to databases containing best practices from various HUD recognition programs:

  • The winners of the Secretary's Best Practice Awards at the 1999 HUD best practices conference.

  • The 1998 winners of the John J. Gunther Blue Ribbon Best Practices featuring cities, counties, and states working in partnership with HUD.

  • Best practices recognized from HUD's Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Community programs.

  • A set of best practices in public housing featuring several programs: the Tenant Opportunities Program, EDSS Program, Public Housing Drug Elimination Program, and others.

The HUD best practices page also has links to several other recognition programs. These include the Innovation Awards from the Kennedy School for State and Local Government at Harvard University; the Alliance for National Renewal: Community Success Stories of the National Civic League; the USDA's Promising Programs; the Enterprise Foundation's online Horizon Magazine; and Handsnet, the online membership information exchange for community activists. For an international perspective, a United Nations Web site, The City: Best Practice, provides information on 700 urban best practices around the world.

Note: Links are subject to change without notice. If you have difficulty with any of these Web sites, a search engine may help you find your way.
