Chronic School Absence

Chronic school absence is the proportion of students attending Minneapolis Public High Schools who missed at least 5% of school days (equivalent to 9 or more school days) during the 2012-2013 school year. The higher the percentage, the greater the negative impact on community health. Data are from the MPS online scorecard –

95% attendance

Chronic school absence affects student participation and engagement in school. Regardless of household income, chronic school absence is related to problems learning, poor academic performance, lower standardized test scores and higher high-school dropout rates. Chronic school absence is influenced by many household, school, and community-level factors. Some of these factors are the community prevalence of chronic diseases (such as asthma,; quality and accessibility of the health care system; community safety; poverty and family circumstances; school social environment, including bullying and discrimination); and social cohesion and trust. Chronic School Absence is in the Health Systems and Public Safety domain.
