School Readiness Scores

School Readiness Scores measures the percentage of kindergarteners that have basic skills necessary to succeed in 1st grade. Higher percentages are better than lower percentages. School readiness data are collected through in-school assessments; however the practice of collecting this data is not universal. Information about school readiness scores for the entire City is available here.

How prepared children are for kindergarten can indicate how well their home environment and community services supported their early childhood development. Being enrolled in preschool, or early childhood education, has positive health benefits such as stronger cognitive and physical development. It is also related to school and employment outcomes, which contribute to improved physical health. Early childhood education in the first five years of life has positive effects on health and well-being up to three decades later. Mothers who had early childhood education are more likely to have healthier pregnancies and babies. School Readiness Scores is included in the Educational Opportunities Domain.
