Adult Educational Attainment

Adult Educational Attainment is the percentage of the population 25 years and older that have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Higher percentages are better than lower percentages. Adult educational attainment was calculated using data from American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates.

Educational attainment is related to employment, income, and some health behaviors. These characteristics are linked to increased physical and mental health. The death rates are lower for adults with higher educational attainment. Individuals who have high levels of education are more likely to rate their health as very good or excellent. Educational attainment has also been shown to have a multi‐generational impact. For example, children of mothers who have a college degree tend to have better health compared to children of mothers who didn’t finish high school. Adult Educational Attainment is included in the Educational Opportunities domain.
