D.C. Among ‘Greenest’ For Buildings

The Washington Post (4/14, Aratani, 572K) reports, “The District leads the Washington region in ‘green’ buildings, according to an assessment that examines environmentally friendly building practices,” noting the District earned LEED certification on 72 projects between 2003 and 2009 while northern Virginia had 59 and Maryland had 40. DC passed the Green Building Act in 2006, the Post notes, which started implementing rules requiring buildings to produce less pollution. “According to a council report released last month, the District ranked first in the country in green buildings per capita, with about 25 square feet of LEED-certified space per person in 2010,” placing second to Nevada. The report was provided Wednesday to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. It “offers the first comprehensive look at how the push to build greener buildings is playing out in communities.”
