Low-Income Housing in Augusta for the First Time.
The Staunton News Leader (6/30) reports "Augusta County officials and local business leaders Wednesday introduced the first housing complex in the county built with a special tax credit program to make rents affordable." A Humanities Foundation board member said the applicants to Waterford Village Apartments are rigorously screened. Waterford "isn't Section 8 or subsidized like the large, urban complexes in which residents pay little or no rent." Developers like the Foundation can afford to charge lower rents because "the state housing authority awards on a competitive basis federal tax credits for developers who build or rehabilitate housing to be made available to lower-income residents."
