Hammond Concentrates on Demolitions of Abandoned Properties
The Chicago Tribune/Times (7/11) reports that the city of Hammond is working "to identify dilapidated properties for either rehabilitation or demolition. Backed by funding the city receives from the Horseshoe Casino, Hammond has demolished approximately 100 properties a year for the past four years, Hammond Chief of Inspections James Callahan said." Most of the structures were residential. Officials estimate that about 90% of them were rentals.
