HUD Releases CN Housing Funds

The Talequah (OK) Daily Press (11/1, Snell, 7K) says that HUD "on Thursday notified the Cherokee Nation the suspension on approximately $39 million in housing funds had been released." In a letter from HUD to the tribe, the agency states that it "reserves the right to reassess its decision in the future if the tribe is deemed to be in violation of the terms of any federal court order." The Cherokee's Principal Chief Bill John Baker is quoted saying, "We are pleased that in our second week of our term we've managed to work with the federal government to have this money released. ... It's important we have that money so we can better take care of our people."
