Columbia, Missouri: Affordable Housing Policy Committee Report
The city of Columbia, Missouri established an affordable housing policy committee in September 2005 to define affordable housing as it relates to the city, and provide solutions for increasing low- and moderate-income housing supply. This report submitted to the City Council includes goals and strategies developed by the committee. Affordable housing goals presented in the report include provision of homeownership and rental assistance, regulatory relief, and other financial incentives to result in over 2,000 housing units affordable to households with earnings below 85 percent of the median family income. Some of the regulatory strategies outlined within the report include modifying the city’s zoning code to allow higher density residential developments, allowing flexible development standards, encouraging infill development, and establishing a fast track development process.
