Affordable Housing Task Force
An Affordable Housing Task Force assists a community in analyzing its current regulatory landscape and makes recommendations to help improve housing affordability. One of the most effective ways to achieve regulatory reform is to build a team of interested individuals with diverse areas of expertise who share an interest in affordable housing. To assist state and local governments, as well as public-private partnerships, in creating an affordable housing task force, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has prepared an advisory guidebook, Creating a Task Force on Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing. The guidebook lists common signs that communities should look for to identify local regulations that are having a negative impact on the development and retention of affordable housing, and outlines the procedure to establish a task force.
To build a task force, the guidebook states that communities must define goals and objectives, select members, designate a chairperson, and assign staff support for the task force. Once relevant research has been analyzed and all goals and objectives have been established, the task force will present a final report that identifies specific regulatory barriers and propose necessary changes to the local governing body for action.
