PD&R Takes New Picture of Subsidized Households in 1997



In A Picture of Subsidized Households in 1997: U.S. Totals & Agencies with over 500 Units, HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research provides researchers and housing industry professionals with an updated and expanded summary of the most current data available on the characteristics of federally assisted housing programs.

A Picture of Subsidized Households encompasses many of the largest Federal housing assistance programs, including public and Indian housing, the various tenant-based and project-based Section 8 programs, Section 236, other HUD subsidies, and the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. The current volume presents an overview of program activities nationwide and in each State as well as of housing agencies that administer more than 500 subsidized units.

Drawn primarily from June and July 1997 data in HUD's own management information systems, the data tables create a statistical snapshot of assisted households and the nearly 5 million subsidized units in which they live. The updated volume provides information on basic household characteristics, including size and composition, race/ethnicity, income, and sources of income. It also summarizes the number of units, occupancy rates, turnover, and average rent for assisted properties, as well as characteristics of the census tracts in which the properties are located.
