New machinery, materials, technology, and techniques have helped the construction industry make great progress in meeting America's affordable housing needs. HUD is helping to make the construction industry aware of new breakthrough materials, labor-saving tools, and cost-cutting techniques. These new developments are detailed in a set of guidebooks, known collectively as The Rehab Guide, that presents state-of-the-art techniques, materials, and technologies for housing rehabilitation. The eighth of nine guidebooks, Electrical/Electronics, is now available.

Electrical/Electronics includes detailed illustrations and graphics to supplement written descriptions. Easy-to-read chapters organize information into four sections. "Essential Knowledge" provides an overview of important issues related to that section, while "Techniques, Materials, Tools" explains approaches to accomplishing the work. "Further Reading" lists valuable resources, and "Product Information" provides the names and addresses of the manufacturers of the products, materials, systems, and components mentioned in the text.

Electrical/Electronics includes a general overview and covers the following topics: service panels, wiring and receptacles, lighting and controls, electric baseboard heating, phone/computer/TV cabling, and security systems. The guide also contains an appendix with professional associations and research centers.

The Rehab Guide series is being developed as part of the Partnership for Advan- cing Technology in Housing to inform the design and construction industry about state-of-the-art materials and innovative practices in housing rehabilitation. The series focuses on building technologies, materials, components, and techniques rather than projects such as adding a new room. When the series is complete, each of the nine volumes will cover a distinct element of housing rehabilitation and feature breakthrough materials, labor-saving tools, and cost-cutting practices. Previously released volumes in the series include:

  • Foundations
  • Exterior Walls
  • Roofs
  • Windows & Doors
  • Partitions, Ceilings, Floors & Stairs
  • Kitchens & Baths
  • HVAC/Plumbing

HUD USER offers Electrical/Electronics and other previously released volumes in the series for $5 each. Use the order form.
