IOD Winning Entries

HUD congratulates the three winning initiatives, which received the most votes in our Innovation of the Day (IOD) online balloting. IOD was designed as a way to collect and share innovative housing, community development, built environment, and urban practices. Its purpose is to crowdsource new models that can be leveraged by governments, philanthropies, nonprofits, and citizens. The IOD winners exemplify how creative solutions are being successfully applied to real-world challenges in community and economic development.

The Fairmount/Indigo Line Community Development Corporation (CDC) Collaborative
The Fairmount/Indigo Line Community Development Corporation (CDC) Collaborative is honored and excited to be one of the first HUD Innovation of the Day awardees. Our success would not be possible without the support and engagement of many community allies, funders and public agencies – including the federal Partnership for Sustainable Communities. We seek equity for low- and moderate-income residents in the Fairmount Corridor through affordable housing, increased access to quality public transit, well-paying jobs, a wide array of locally available goods and services, sustainability innovations, expanded open space, and safe, lively public places enriched through the arts. We are positioning ourselves to face new challenges ahead, including preventing displacement, strengthening financial resilience, and establishing pathways to better paying jobs.

International Sustainability Institute’s Alley Network Project
The International Sustainability Institute is honored to accept this award from HUD on behalf of the community in the Pioneer Square neighborhood in Seattle. The work to reclaim the alleys as safe and active community spaces required the talent and dedication of people who brought refined technical and project-management skills to the table, along with an innate understanding of how to cultivate community. The City of Seattle and the Alliance for Pioneer Square worked as critical partners in this effort, and the ISI staff had the fortitude to see this work through.
