Habitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, scheduled to take place October 17 - 20, 2016, in Quito, Ecuador. The UN convened the first Habitat conference in 1976 in Vancouver, sparking an international dialogue on urban issues. Twenty years later, at Habitat II in Istanbul, Turkey, world leaders adopted the Habitat Agenda, a global action plan aimed at providing adequate shelter for all. The Habitat III Conference is intended to reinvigorate the global commitment to sustainable urbanization.
HUD congratulates the three winning initiatives, which received the most votes in our Innovation of the Day (IOD) online balloting. IOD was designed as a way to collect and share innovative housing, community development, built environment, and urban practices. Its purpose is to crowdsource new models that can be leveraged by governments, philanthropies, nonprofits, and citizens. The IOD winners exemplify how creative solutions are being successfully applied to real-world challenges in community and economic development.
The Edge, an online magazine, provides easily understood translations of PD&R and HUD partners' research, a message from PD&R Senior staff, and a wide range of information on housing and community development issues, regulations, and case studies.
