Age of Housing

Age of Housing is the proportion of houses in a neighborhood built before 1980. The higher the proportion of houses built before 1980, the higher the negative impact on health if the housing has not been maintained. Because a large proportion of housing in Minneapolis was built before 1980, age of housing is shown for each neighborhood but not included in neighborhood rankings. Data is from the 2010 U.S. Census.

Older homes are more likely to be less energy efficient. If older homes are not maintained they are more likely to have failing systems or components, asbestos, and lead-based paint. Age of housing is a proxy for housing condition or quality. Homes built before 1980 that have not been revitalized often have an increase in dust, mold, mites, and other allergens related to poor health. Age of Housing is included in the Housing domain.
