Proximity to Brownfield Sites

Proximity to Brownfield Sites is the proportion of a neighborhood located in close proximity to a brownfield site that was active in 2014. The higher the share of the neighborhood located close to a brownfield site, the higher the negative impact on the neighborhood. Brownfield data are from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Brownfields may have biological, physical, or chemical environmental dangers because of site contamination, groundwater impacts, surface runoff, migration of contaminants, or wastes dumped on site. Brownfields may have community health impacts. Examples of community impacts include safety issues due to abandoned or dilapidated buildings, compromised infrastructure and equipment, and contamination from toxic substances. In addition, brownfields may have an adverse impact on social and economic factors such as reduced property values and tax base. Proximity to brownfield sites is in the Environmental Hazards domain.
