School Proximity to Traffic

School Proximity to Traffic is the proportion of schools in a neighborhood located near high traffic roadways. High traffic roadways are freeways or major arterial roadways. The higher the percentage of schools, the more negative the impact on neighborhood health. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) AADAT GIS Shapefile was used to identify high traffic roadways. The National Center for Educational Statistics and Minneapolis Public School data were used to identify school locations.

School proximity to traffic is a strong indicator of children’s health. Students at schools near high traffic areas are at higher risk of near-road pollution exposure. Asthma is more common in children attending schools near major roadways. This indicator is in the Environmental Hazards domain.
