Commute Mode Share

The Commute Mode Share indicator measures the proportion of residents who commute to work via public transit, walking, biking, or carpool. Higher percentages are better than lower percentages. Commute mode share is calculated using data from American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates.

Fewer vehicles on the road due to carpooling is linked to lower air pollution and car accidents. Regular transit riders are more likely to meet physical activity guidelines and have lower rates of obesity than non-transit riders. Carpool riders are more likely to walk or bike for non-commuting trips during the day. Walking and biking also promote health. Commute Mode Share is in the Transportation Services domain.
