Household Transportation Costs
The Household Transportation Costs indicator is the average percentage of income a household spends on transportation. Lower percentages are better than higher percentages. Data are from the Location Affordability Index (LAI) on HUD’s Location Affordability Portal.
Household transportation costs affect individual health and community health. Households that spend more money on transportation often face greater economic stresses and tend to be in areas with few alternatives to driving. Low-income families often pay high transportation costs. High costs can leave less money for food, health care and other necessities. High transportation costs are usually related to car ownership. Car ownership adds to pollution, and therefore negatively affects air quality. The Household Transportation Costs indicator is in the Transportation Services domain.
